ITU Industrial Engineering Introduction
Finding the proper job according to oneself is rather hard for a young person in age 18. There is a general guidance for students after the university entrance exams in our country, Turkey. If there is a successful student who has enough point for all departments, nearly all of his/her teachers, guidance teachers and big probably family want to choosing Medicine Department. Making the right choice for oneself according to his/her character and talent is a painful duration in such an environment. If I can help with this writing to this duration, I be happy. If I would write a writing about introduction of industrial engineering, it was better but I wanted to write it more comprehensive and I have limited resources now. I will write it in the future. This writing is not “what is industrial engineering?” writing. Therefore there is not information what industrial engineer does or who can choose. This writing is for people who searched industrial engineering and wondering industrial engineering in Istanbul Technical University. There are specific information just about ITU Industrial Engineering. I added also ideas of my friends. Otherwise, it could be misleading and subjective. The writing is a complied version of ITU Industrial Engineering from different students’ perspectives.
Department is connected to Management Faculty which has three departments; management engineering, economics, and industrial engineering. It’s near Foreign Languages School and conservatory. Being near conservatory is good because you can meet with small concerts of conservatory students at common canteens in the afternoons. There are many advantages of location, Maçka for students. The location of department is only far away 10 minutes on foot to Beşiktaş, 20 minutes on foot, 10 minutes by cable car to Taksim. There is Maçka Park which is one of the Istanbul’s the most beautiful parks in front of the department. Students can go to the park, rest on grass, and converse.
The building is a historical building. It is aesthetically beautiful, although not as beautiful as a Taşkışla Campus. There are many commercial and photo shootings on the stairs and historical gate. There are some lacks of building if I compare with other ITU buildings and campuses. One of the most felt is the lack of a library which students can study. There is a small library in the department but there isn’t a studying area inside. The area which is identified as studying area is not necessary to speak. It can’t be never accepted. It is a shame that not being of studying area of a campus in such a good university. Another lack is not being a quad which students can rest and converse in the afternoons. There are quads in almost every departments but there isn’t in Management Faculty. There is a quad which is opened only in summer school but it is not used in fall and spring semesters and it is neglected naturally. Dining hall is very big and two floors. The places like dining hall are not heeded in the design step due to they are in the background. People get bored in the 30 minutes eating time. Contrary, the common dining hall which is used by foreign languages school, management faculty, and conservatory is a beautiful and spacious place.
The lectures are various. You learn somethings nearly from all topics as heard. Basic engineering lectures as mathematics and physics, production, planning, economics, human resources, IT, probability, statistics, management, quality, ergonomics, and employment law are some of the lectures. Department is one of the easiest departments in the engineering departments. The students say it is difficult but mechanical engineering’s or civil engineering’s hard physics lectures are never taken. Lectures are easy but there are projects, presentations, reports, homeworks except midterm and final exams in almost every lectures. Density starts one month after the beginning of the term and it continues until end of the term. It is easy to deal with the desired things one by one but dealing with all things in the same time is hard. This situation actually prepares the students to private sector unawares.
Department splits up two parts as 30% English and 100% English. 30% English section’s point is lower but they are luck at one point. 100% English students have to take all lessons English and they can’t take lessons from the valuable teachers who give just Turkish lessons. 30% English students have chance of choosing both English and Turkish lessons. The number of elective courses are always more in Turkish language also. Although studying in 100% English helps to learning English well. Your all exams, all lectures, all projects, and all presentations are English. Your English is improved until end of the school and you be more familiar to English professional terms.
Lecturers are various as in every school. There are lecturers who are very knowledgeable and share that knowledge with the students and there are also lecturers who always be late to class and lecture like that s/he doesn’t want to. If I think generally, lecturers are above average of Turkey but I think they are inadequate for students. Most of students have capacity and learning eagerness. The lectures would be more effective but most of lecturers use the same slides for years. Although even if they use the same slides, the education is above average of Turkey. You can talk with lecturers, you can ask questions. The teacher who rebuffs to student is rare. And there are some lecturers that you learn many things if you can have an opportunity of working one-to-one for a project or a graduation thesis.
Industrial Engineering Club(EMK, Turkish abbreviation of IEC) is a rather rooted club. EMOS(Turkish abbreviation of Industrial Engineering Student Symposium) organization which attends industrial engineering students from all universities in Turkey took place in media. You can have a part in the club actively. You improve yourself socially and you can have opportunity that you can connect with important people from private sector.
Students so your future friends are very talented people. There are so different people come to university that you can think as a preparation school to private sector. This situation changes your conversation, world perspective, professional knowledge, and you at the end. This change will be the point that you make difference in the future. Besides, there is always competition. The competition is not an obstacle for friendships but you always fell it in the environment.
You have advantage when finding internships because of being Istanbul. Most of big companies’ centers are in Istanbul or their factories are close to Istanbul. The companies in Istanbul also prefer students who study in Istanbul. Your school brand besides being Istanbul is effective also when starting internship in big companies. There are many friends who start to long term internships in third year of university and work in there after graduation.
Lastly, there is no need to speak actually finding job after graduation. An engineer who graduates from ITU Industrial Engineering never become unemployed. If s/he becomes, it happens with his/her wish. Graduates receive high salaries according to Turkey in dozens of different sectors. There are also many graduates who work in abroad. The student prefers that which sector s/he will work or whether s/he will go abroad. Your diploma is enough for all sectors and all companies in Turkey. We can’t speak like that for abroad but ITU brand and your education helps finding job in the abroad also.
Don’t leave to chance your future job when making preference list. It mustn’t be like Cerrahpasa Medicine, ODTU Mechanical, and ITU Management. List shouldn’t be like that never. Determine the job most proper for you and make a list which there is only that department. You can write ITU Industrial Engineering in the top of the list. I want to touch all topics. If there are more specific questions you wonder, you can ask in the comments.
